Description:The course focuses on the main topics, authors, works and debates that constitute the current corpus of cultural theory in the Hispanic world, particularly in Latin America. The course will focus on the different critical and theoretical "turns" that have impacted critical and theoretical approaches particularly in the last four decades. The topics to be covered are: Memory, Transnationalism, Popular Culture, Ethics, Subalternism, Cultural Studies, Decolonialization, Indigenous Studies, Performance Studies, Feminism, Deconstruction, Cultural Policy, Transatlantic Studies, Gender and Sexuality, Affect, and Posthegemony. The basis for the course will be the chapters gathered in New Approaches to Latin American Studies. Culture and Power (Routledge, 2018) (also available in Spanish: Nuevos Acercamientos a los estudios latinoamericanos. Cultura y poder (CLACSO 2022), Edited by Juan Poblete. Other materials will be added to enrich the discussion of the topics mentioned above and to illustrate the work of particular Latin American cultural critics. The goal of the course is to familiarize students with current directions of inquiry, concepts and themes, and to explore the possible applications of new categories for the study of literature, visual arts, and performance, as well as for the understanding of social and political change in the context of globalization.

Home/Ident

A course may be either a “Home” course or an “Ident” course.

A “Home” course is a course that is created, maintained and “owned” by one academic department (aka the “Home” department). The “Home” department is primarily responsible for the decision making and logistical support for the course and instructor.

An “Ident” course is the exact same course as the “Home” (i.e. same instructor, same class time, etc), but is simply being offered to students through another department for purposes of registering under a different department and course number.

Students should, whenever possible, register for their courses under the department number toward which they intend to count the course. For example, an AFAS major should register for the course "Africa: Peoples and Cultures" under its Ident number, L90 306B, whereas an Anthropology major should register for the same course under its Home number, L48 306B.
